These organizations, accredited
by the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS), oversee
the conversion of farms from conventional to organic farming (or
the establishment of new organic ventures).
It’s a multi-step
process that requires detailing your present and past farming practices
and soil and crop testing by inspectors. If successful your farm
is considered in ‘pre conversion’ for a year. Accreditation
to ‘A grade’ organic generally takes three years. Not
only is it costly and time consuming, in the early years yields can
be low.
It takes real tenacity and perseverance to become an
organic farmer. We’re grateful they do it!
